After more than thirty years in a traditional office, I realized it was time for a new chapter—one where I could truly own my time and work on my terms.
I started by spending a couple of months working remotely in Minnesota, balancing networking with some light client work. What I discovered was more than just freedom—it was real balance. With control over my schedule, I could finally focus on my health, personal responsibilities, and meaningful work, all without burning out.
The biggest surprise? I wasn’t less productive—I was more. I found myself fully immersed in each project, and work started to feel engaging, even fun. There were days I worked well past eight hours, simply because I was enjoying it.
Pre-Travelling Prep: Cabin Life and Manual Labor
Before diving into my Spanish adventures, I’m tackling a project closer to home: building a deck at our cabin in Robledo de Chavela. There’s something grounding about manual labor in the great outdoors. At the “finca,” it’s easy to spend the whole day on chores. But nature is wise—by noon, the heat demands a break. So, I get up early, work until midday, then head into town for shopping and a beer and “pincho” at the local bar. After lunch at the cabin, I take a long siesta, work a bit more in the evening, have dinner, and call it a night. It’s a simple, quiet life, and I love it.

Summer Plans: Work Hard, Play Harder in Spain (and Beyond?)
Now for the fun part! This summer, I’m taking the plunge—working full-time from Spain and adding in some travel. My wife and I are starting with a trip to the beach in Cadiz, at La Barrosa.

Then, mid July, we’re meeting up with friends to explore the incredible cities and sights Spain has to offer:
- Madrid: Exploring the vibrant capital.
- Toledo: Visiting the historic El Alcázar.
- Sevilla: Taking in the breathtaking La Giralda.
- Granada: Marveling at the Alhambra.
- Cádiz: Relaxing on the Playa de la Victoria.
- Madrid: Visiting the Monasterio del Escorial, y La Cruz de Los Caidos

But the adventure doesn’t stop there! In mid-August, one of my best friends from Minnesota, Brent, is joining me, and we’re hitting the road—ready to explore more of Spain, and maybe even venture into other parts of Europe.
September: Back to My Roots in Jerez de la Frontera
September will be a deeply personal journey. I’m taking my parents to Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz—the city where they both grew up, just a stone’s throw from each other. My grandmothers were neighbors, and when my mother was born, my dad’s mom famously said, “Carmencita is going to be for my Paquito!” (Spoiler: she was right.)
While in Jerez, I’ll be attending the Vendimia—a couple of weeks of festivities and concerts, culminating in the traditional grape crushing at the steps of the Colegial, the Cathedral of Jerez. It’s a chance to reconnect with my heritage and share that experience with my parents.
Recharging for Success
This isn’t just a vacation—it’s an investment in my well-being and my business. I know this experience will recharge my batteries and help me dedicate myself fully to my work during the long Minnesota winter. Sometimes, you need to step away to come back stronger and more focused than ever.
If you’re skeptical about remote work or think it means doing less, I challenge you: try it for a month. The outcome might surprise you.
